VRMISR Chapter 3 All Photos Lie: Images as Data

Chapter 3 implies that researchers should understand that photographs maybe deceiving. Photographs should be easily interpreted by all audiences, not just of the researcher. Although photographs add reality, the photographer may mislead the audience by manipulating the photos.

Thus, questioning the integrity of the images and the photographer. However, the photographer may have pure intentions but the fact will always remain that photographs lie. All photos lie, the intent of photo may be intentionally or unintentionally manipulated. Reality is that the photographs will never really represent reality in its entirety because photographs represent the subject in a two-dimensional form rather that of a three-dimensional world. Question the intent of the photographer and the image that is being represented.

As Goldstein suggest when viewing images as data remember:

  1. Every image is manipulated

  2. The content presented was by the choice of the photographer.

  3. The response from the viewer should involve:

  4. The content of the photo

  5. Perception of intent
